Dr. Newton was born and raised in Atlanta. Remaining true to her roots, she attended the University of Georgia, but as marriage approached, she transferred to Georgia State University where she earned her B.A., graduating with Honors in Psychology. She then went on to receive both her Master of Arts as well as her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Georgia State University.
During the more than three decades that Dr. Newton has been practicing psychology, she has worked with a vast array of clients in a wide variety of settings. While at Georgia State, she worked extensively conducting intake evaluations as well as providing long-term therapy to college students. Working in the Child Assessment Laboratory, Dr. Newton developed skills in assessing children of all ages as well as working with children and parents using play therapy techniques. She extended her work experience to include providing individual and group therapy to patients in the Out-Patient Unit at Grady Memorial Hospital. She continued her academic experience with several years of teaching psychology at Georgia State University along with working in the Counseling Center of the University.
Seeking to broaden her professional experiences and population of clients, Dr. Newton left the academic setting to work within hospitals, both public and private, as well as in Community Mental Health services. In these settings, Dr. Newton provided extensive services to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She established and maintained a private psychology practice for over twenty years, before affiliating with Atlanta Area Psychological Associates in 2006.
Trained in the Humanistic and Interpersonal-Psychodynamic tradition, Dr. Newton has continued to expand her therapeutic skills during her professional career. She has trained extensively in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) with Dr. David Burns, Dr. Arthur Freeman and with Drs. Aaron and Judith Beck. In her years of practice, she has developed a depth of experience that enables her to help many people with a wide range of problems. Among these problems are the severe and often disabling symptoms of depression and other mood disorders, anxiety and panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, post-traumatic disorders, developmental problems of childhood, behavioral problems of childhood and adolescence, academic problems, substance abuse and addiction issues, relationship issues, couples/marriage issues, life stage issues, grief and loss, and the issues of aging. She works with individuals who are dealing with chronic and/or severe medical issues or conditions. These issues include pain management as well as the psychological aspects of medical conditions. She works with clients of all ages in the context of individual, group, couples, and family therapy.
Dr. Newton also conducts a wide variety of psychological evaluations and assessments. These include cognitive, achievement, ADD/ADHD, and personality assessments. She has worked with cases involving a wide array of forensic issues and has provided expert witness testimony in numerous cases. She has also provided evaluations for custody issues and adoption evaluations.
